💼 Staff Software Engineer

Hey there!

I'm Kai Boon, a software engineer with over a decade of building systems at companies like Brex, Google, Bloomberg, and Chronicle (one of the early employees before Google acquired us). These days I'm a Staff Engineer at Brex, where I'm building AI solutions in the accounting space to make continuous close a reality—helping accounting teams code transactions accurately and close their books continuously instead of waiting until month-end.

I've spent my career building the kind of systems that need to scale: distributed architectures that process petabytes of data, APIs that power enterprise integrations, and platforms that handle millions of transactions. At Chronicle, I was one of the first 10 engineers and helped build our data ingestion infrastructure from the ground up. At Google, I worked on API infrastructure that served teams across the company.

What gets me excited lately is the intersection of traditional software engineering and AI. I've been deep in the weeds with AI tooling—building Model Context Protocol tools, designing LLM-powered workflows, and helping teams ship faster using AI-assisted development. I'm fascinated by how AI has shaken up our industry and our lives, transforming not just how we build but what we can build.

Leading teams is something I care deeply about. I've grown engineering groups, mentored folks from mid-level to senior, onboarded new managers and PMs, and tried to create environments where people do their best work. Whether I'm writing code myself or helping others grow, I want to build things that matter and work with people who push me to be better.

Outside of work, you'll find me hiking trails around the Bay Area, trying new restaurants, or planning my next trip. I grew up in Malaysia, went to Michigan for college, and now call the Bay Area home. This site is where I share what I'm learning, things I've built, and occasionally stories from outside the terminal.

I used to write on Medium (@eekaiboon), but I'll be sharing new posts here going forward.

Thanks for stopping by.
